Presidential candidate Peter Obi has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the proposed review of WAEC and NECO examination registration fees, describing it as a victory for Nigerians.
In a statement posted on X, Obi commended the authorities for responding to public concerns but criticised the proposed fee increase, saying it would have placed an unnecessary burden on families already facing economic challenges.
He argued that government policies should expand access to education and reduce the number of out-of-school children rather than create additional financial barriers.
Obi said education should be treated as a fundamental right and public good, not as a means of generating government revenue.
The former Anambra governor said imposing additional fees at the basic education level could prevent some children from accessing schooling, adding that the government has a responsibility to invest in education and prepare young Nigerians for productive futures.
He also praised citizens, parents and advocacy groups who raised concerns over the policy, saying leadership requires the willingness to reconsider decisions that create hardship for the people.
