The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria has directed its members across the country to inspect their fuel dispensing meters following a warning from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority over alleged under-dispensing of petroleum products.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He explained that the association held an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday after the regulator raised concerns about the accuracy of fuel measurements at retail outlets.
According to him, the meeting lasted until about 10 p.m., after which members were instructed to immediately check their dispensing equipment and fix any faults identified.
Gillis-Harry noted that dispensing meters can develop faults after prolonged use, which could result in customers receiving less fuel than they paid for.
In some cases, faulty equipment could also dispense more fuel than the customer paid for, leading to losses for filling station operators.
PETROAN is now engaging its members nationwide to ensure their equipment is functioning properly and accurately.
The association also reiterated its commitment to ensuring motorists receive the quantity of fuel they pay for.
Motorists have been advised to monitor the quantity displayed on the dispensing meter while buying fuel and request receipts after making purchases.
Gillis-Harry also urged consumers to familiarise themselves with their vehicles’ fuel capacities and use that information to cross-check the quantity indicated by fuel dispensers.
The NMDPRA had warned filling station operators that outlets found under-dispensing petroleum products could face sanctions, including the withdrawal of their operating licences.
