The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state over the threat of a diphtheria outbreak.
The directive takes effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, following the detection of suspected cases in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
In a statement on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said schools that have already resumed academic activities must also shut from Monday and remain closed until further notice.
She urged school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain at home.
Ramnap said the measure was intended to protect students, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff, while the government takes steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
The state government appealed to all stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation as it continues to take measures to safeguard public health.
