The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered officers to shoot anyone found carrying illegal firearms, describing the reports as false and a misrepresentation of his remarks.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the viral reports circulating on social media took the IGP's comments out of context following a stakeholders' meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to the police, the IGP did not issue any "shoot-on-sight" directive during the meeting.
Instead, he reminded officers that only legally authorised security personnel are permitted to carry firearms and highlighted the growing threat posed by illegal weapons used in crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult violence and other criminal activities.
The statement added that the IGP also reminded officers that the use of firearms is governed by Force Order 237, which clearly outlines the circumstances under which police officers may lawfully use their weapons while carrying out official duties.
It stressed that officers are expected to act within the law and follow approved rules on the use of force at all times.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and upholding the rights of all Nigerians, while urging the public and media organisations to verify information before publishing or sharing it.
The Force also encouraged Nigerians to watch the full video of the IGP's remarks, saying it clearly shows the comments in their proper context.
