Police Expand Counter-Terrorism Capacity, Approve New CTU Bases

The Nigeria Police Force has expanded its counter-terrorism capacity with a specialised training programme designed to enhance the operational readiness of officers in its Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).

The two-week Close Quarter Battle and Intelligence Analysis programme trained 56 officers from CTUs across the country. The training was conducted in partnership with the British High Commission Abuja through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa.

Participants received instruction in modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence analysis and operational best practices aimed at improving coordinated responses to security threats.

At the closing ceremony held at the Peacekeeping Conference Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel Ian Tyler of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator’s office praised the professionalism of the officers and encouraged them to apply the skills acquired in their field operations.

Representing the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Akoh Gabriel said the initiative reflects the Force’s determination to strengthen its capacity to respond to evolving security challenges. He also commended the continued support of the British Government in advancing counter-terrorism cooperation.

As part of broader security measures, the IGP also approved the establishment of new CTU bases in Madagali in Adamawa State, Ikot Odo in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, and Ode-Remo in Ogun State.

The Force added that additional CTU personnel will be deployed to strategic locations across the country to improve rapid response capability and operational coverage in the fight against terrorism and related security threats.
