Police Foil Railway Vandalism Syndicate, Recover ₦400 Million Worth of Assets

The Nigeria Police Force says it has dismantled a railway vandalism syndicate and recovered critical national infrastructure valued at over ₦400 million in Nasarawa State.

In a statement on Sunday, the Force said operatives of the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad arrested two suspects, Chisom Goodnews (32) and Ahmed Adamu (22), on April 9, 2026, in Akwanga following credible intelligence.

Police said a trailer truck carrying about 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers was intercepted, with the materials concealed under sacks of groundnut shells in an attempt to evade detection while being moved from Bauchi State to Ilorin, Kwara State.

Preliminary findings showed the driver was paid ₦2.5 million to transport the stolen materials, while investigations suggest the existence of an organised network involved in the theft and distribution of railway infrastructure.

The Force also said its operatives rejected a ₦100 million bribe allegedly offered to compromise the investigation and secure the release of the suspects and exhibits.

The Inspector-General of Police commended the officers for their professionalism and described the operation as evidence of the Force’s commitment to protecting national assets and resisting corruption.

Police added that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate and recover additional stolen materials.
