Pope Leo XIV Calls on Catholics to Live Faith Through Charity

Pope Leo XIV has called on Christian lay people to live their faith through selfless acts of charity that respond to contemporary societal needs.

The Pope made the remarks on Saturday during an audience with members of the National Confederation of the Misericordie of Italy, a voluntary organization with roots dating back to the 13th century.

Founded by St. Peter of Verona, the group has historically combined spiritual devotion with service to the poor and vulnerable.

“The seed from which the great tree of which you are part has sprouted and grown is therefore sacramental in nature, it is founded on Baptism and therefore moral and ascetical,” Pope Leo said, recalling the confederation’s centuries-long history of faith and charity.

He highlighted the organization’s initiatives, including the introduction of “Custodians of Mercy,” lay members tasked with mentoring others in their Christian journey.

“Their ministry is exercised and received in a climate of co-responsibility, affectionate belonging, and communion, in which all are protagonists in a common effort to grow in Christian perfection,” the Pope added.

The Pope also commended the Misericordie’s practical work, noting their presence in war zones, disaster areas, and other contexts where assistance is needed.

“You do not limit yourselves to ‘doing for,’ but you commit yourselves to ‘walking with,’ recognizing in other brothers and sisters, each with their dignity and their story,” he said.

Pope Leo concluded by urging lay Christians to adapt their acts of charity to the evolving needs of society while remaining witnesses of hope, peace, and the Gospel.

“Aim to grow in spirit, and to serve with joy and simplicity, avoiding all logic of power, devoted to the praise of God and to the good of those whom the Lord places along your path,” he said.

The National Confederation of the Misericordie of Italy, with its centuries-long legacy, continues to combine faith, communal engagement, and humanitarian work across Italy, Portugal, and the Americas.
