Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate end to hostilities in Ukraine, describing peace as “an urgent necessity” during his Sunday address at St Peter’s Square.
“Peace cannot be postponed. It must find space in hearts and be translated into responsible decisions,” he said.
“May the weapons fall silent, the bombings cease, and a ceasefire be reached without delay.”
Ukraine marks four years since Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022, a conflict that has displaced millions, killed thousands, and left towns in ruins.
Despite heavy losses, Moscow continues to hold nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory, pushing forward in the Donbas region.
The United States has been mediating talks between both sides, but no breakthrough has yet been achieved.
