Pope Leo XIV has warned that artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping global conflicts and must be placed under strict ethical control to prevent misuse by powerful actors.
Speaking during the presentation of his first major theological document, Magnifica Humanitas, at the Vatican, the Pope said AI is already transforming warfare, decision-making, and social systems worldwide.
The 235-page encyclical focuses on the moral, social, and political risks linked to rapidly advancing artificial intelligence.
From Vatican City, he urged world leaders and technology developers to ensure AI serves humanity rather than dominates it.
He stressed that the use of AI in military operations must be tightly regulated due to its growing role in modern warfare.
The pontiff warned that concentrated control of AI in the hands of a few corporations and governments poses serious dangers, insisting that the technology is not morally neutral and reflects human choices in its design and use.
