Pope Leo XIV, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent violent attacks in Nigeria, urging authorities to strengthen efforts to protect citizens.
In a Sunday post on X, the pontiff offered prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence in Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life,” he wrote.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism.
I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.”
The Pope’s message comes amid escalating insecurity following deadly assaults across several communities.
In Kwara State, gunmen attacked Woro village shortly after military operations targeted “terrorist elements,” burning shops and the home of a traditional ruler, sparking fear among residents.
Similarly, in Katsina State, over 20 people were reportedly killed during a bandit raid in Doma community, Tafoki Ward. Witnesses said attackers stormed the area in large numbers, opening fire before fleeing.
In Benue State, suspected bandits attacked Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area, destroying several homes.
Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet confirmed security forces repelled the attackers with no casualties, but locals reported the burning of houses during the attack.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved security measures as communities continue to face deadly threats.
