Portable, Charles Okocha Set for July 31 Rematch as Ezekiel Adamu Unveils Bigger Chaos in the Ring

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Balmoral Group, Ezekiel Adamu, has promised a bigger and more competitive edition of Chaos in the Ring, with celebrity boxing rematches, international bouts and world-class production headlining the July 31 event in Lagos.

Speaking ahead of the event, Adamu said the boxing showcase has continued to grow since its inception, stressing that the organisers remain focused on building momentum rather than chasing perfection.

"For us, it's never been about perfection. It's always been about momentum. Every edition moves us closer to the goal we're trying to achieve, attracts a different fan base and keeps getting better," he said.

The event, scheduled for July 31 at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, will feature professional boxing contests alongside celebrity exhibition fights.

One of the headline attractions is the rematch between controversial singer Portable and Nollywood actor Charles Okocha, three years after Portable defeated the actor in their first celebrity boxing encounter. Organisers described the rematch as "Unfinished Business."

Another celebrity clash will pit musicians Mr. Real and Idowest against each other following weeks of online exchanges.

In the professional category, Nigerian boxer Taiwo Agbaje will face South Africa's Sonjika in a bout Adamu believes could become one of the night's biggest attractions.

He also highlighted the light heavyweight contest between Gode Apa and Lekomuhibe, as well as Elvis Ahorgah's fight against former world title challenger Liam Williams.

Williams is set for his return to the ring against Ahorgah- 21 months after he retired because of concussions.

The 34-year-old former British, European and Commonwealth champion will fight in Lagos on Friday, 31 July.

Adamu said celebrity fights help attract new audiences to boxing while professional contests keep fans engaged with the sport.

"Celebrity fights give us a different audience, while our professional fighters ensure they remain interested in boxing. Together, they help grow the sport," he said.

The Balmoral Group chief also disclosed that Chaos in the Ring is in discussions with global boxing broadcaster DAZN over a broader collaboration aimed at showcasing African boxing talent to international audiences.

According to him, broadcasting partnerships remain critical to the development of combat sports in Nigeria.

"The biggest thing you can have in sports is broadcasting. Otherwise, you're just winking in the dark. Having DAZN behind what we're are building means African talent can reach a global audience," Adamu said.

He added that the previous edition generated more than two billion social media views and about 4.2 billion impressions across digital platforms, describing the figures as evidence of the event's growing international appeal.

Adamu also called for greater government support for boxing, saying the sport has significantly improved earnings for local fighters and created employment opportunities.

"When we started, some boxers earned as little as ₦50,000 or ₦100,000 per fight. Today, fighters on our cards earn millions. Government support will help us take the sport to the next level, but we won't wait for it before doing what we have to do," he said.

The event has also secured a partnership with sports betting company Bet9ja, which will integrate the fights into its betting platform, allowing fans to wager on bouts during the competition.

Meanwhile, Agbaje vowed to defeat his South African opponent, saying he hopes to give Nigerian fans a memorable performance.

"I'm ready. I want to do my talking in the ring. My goal is to stop him within four rounds," the boxer declared.

The July 31 event is expected to feature several professional boxing contests, celebrity fights and live global broadcasts as organisers seek to further establish Chaos in the Ring as one of Africa's leading combat sports entertainment platforms.
