The Federal Government has expressed condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the deaths of people arrested during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the Wushishi/Lukoto axis of the state.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris conveyed the government’s condolences to Gov. Mohammed Umaru Bago, traditional leaders and residents of Wushishi, as well as the families and loved ones of those who died.
Idris said the Federal Government considers the protection of the lives, dignity and fundamental rights of Nigerians a solemn responsibility.
He said the circumstances surrounding the deaths require a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to establish what happened.
The minister noted that the Federal Government has already taken steps to investigate the incident, including the suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye.
The suspension was ordered by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who also directed a full investigation into the incident.
Idris said the action reflects the seriousness with which the government views the matter, adding that appropriate steps would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining and other unlawful activities that threaten national security, the economy and the environment.
He stressed, however, that enforcement operations must be carried out within the law and with respect for human life and dignity.
