The Presidency has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the move as unnecessary and politically motivated.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Federal Government had no objection to an international probe if the governor believed there were unresolved issues.
However, he questioned why anyone would suggest that security agencies deliberately allowed the victims to remain in captivity for 56 days.
Onanuga said security personnel, including soldiers and members of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, lost their lives during the rescue operation, while one of the abducted teachers was killed by the attackers.
He accused Makinde, whom he described as a presidential aspirant, of politicising the incident and attempting to undermine Nigerian institutions.
Makinde had earlier called for a United Nations investigation, saying an independent review was needed to establish the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue, and to strengthen public confidence in the country’s security system.
