The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, speaking at a Citizens Townhall on the 2026 Electoral Act, has urged lawmakers to adopt simple, clear language in election legislation to guarantee transparency and public understanding.
Amupitan, who represented Nigeria at an international conference on electoral integrity, recalled facing criticism about Nigeria’s governance and fraud issues.
“Every negative comment was about Nigeria. But I used the opportunity to highlight that Nigerians are among the happiest and most capable people in the world,” he said.
Highlighting the role of INEC in conducting elections at all levels, Amupitan emphasized the importance of logistics, technology, and voter education in ensuring credible polls.
He cited challenges during the recent FCT Area Council elections, noting delays in real-time result transmission due to difficult terrain and network limitations in Kabi Ward, Kuje.
“The problem is not the network itself but its adequacy in remote areas,” he said.
Amupitan stressed that a successful election requires proper start times, peaceful conduct, and effective result management.
“Logistics and preparation are the backbone of credible elections.
While perfection may not be achievable immediately, INEC is committed to giving Nigerians the best possible elections,” he added.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Amupitan assured Nigerians, “By the grace of God, the 2027 elections will be the best Nigerians have ever experienced.
A transparent process will build confidence in leaders and strengthen national development.”
The professor also called on civil society and media organizations to collaborate with INEC to guarantee accountability and safeguard democracy.
He concluded that simplified legislation would empower voters and reinforce the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
