Racism Allegation and Mourinho Red Card Overshadow Benfica vs Real Madrid Clash

The UEFA Champions League encounter between Benfica and Real Madrid was overshadowed by serious allegations of racism, a volatile atmosphere, and the dismissal of Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior alleged that he was subjected to repeated racist abuse during a heated confrontation in the second half, prompting the referee to halt play as UEFA’s anti-racism protocol was activated.

Real Madrid players surrounded match officials, with tensions escalating both on the pitch and in the technical areas.

France international Kylian Mbappe, in an interview, later stated that he heard Vinicius being called a “monkey” five times during the exchange, lending weight to the Brazilian’s complaint and intensifying reactions from Real Madrid players.

The situation remained highly charged after play resumed, with frequent stoppages, heated arguments, and a hostile reaction from sections of the home crowd.

Mourinho was shown a red card from the touchline following repeated protests towards the officials as tempers continued to flare.

Despite the controversy, Vinicius went on to score the decisive goal, giving Real Madrid a 1-0 lead in the first leg.

However, the result was largely secondary due to the incidents that dominated the contest.

The match adds to ongoing concerns over racism in European football, particularly involving Vinicius, who has previously been targeted on multiple occasions.

UEFA is expected to examine the referee’s report as attention turns to possible disciplinary action stemming from the allegations and the disorderly conduct during the match.
