Several residents were displaced on Saturday evening after a heavy rainstorm destroyed buildings in parts of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
The storm reportedly blew off the roofs of residential, religious, and commercial buildings in areas such as Testing Ground, Oke Oniti, Awosuru, Gbongan Road, and Oke Baale, leaving many residents scrambling to salvage their belongings.
The rainstorm also fell a billboard along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road, briefly obstructing traffic before it was cleared from the busy route.
A resident, Pastor Israel, whose church building was affected in the Testing Ground area, called on the government to assist displaced residents with relief materials and support.
The governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, described the incident as unfortunate and expressed sympathy for the victims.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor pledged support for the affected residents through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency.
He also directed the Ministry of Works to clear affected roads to prevent accidents.
Governor Adeleke attributed the increasing frequency of such natural disasters to climate change, urging the residents to adopt preventive measures such as tree planting and the avoidance of indiscriminate tree felling.
