Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone minor knee surgery after sustaining an injury in training, adding to his recent fitness problems.
The 26-year-old defender missed Chelsea’s 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge after medical assessments determined that surgery was necessary.
Chelsea confirmed that James had successfully undergone the procedure and had begun rehabilitation at the club’s Cobham training centre.
However, the club has not provided a timeline for his return.
James had recently returned to training ahead of the Bournemouth match but experienced discomfort in his knee.
He had also missed Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford following a separate injury, which ruled him out of England’s squad for the international break.
Manager Xabi Alonso said the club would assess the defender’s recovery week by week.
Chelsea will now prepare for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Everton without their captain, with Alonso expected to consider alternative options at right-back.
