Reps Criticize WAEC Chiefs Over Exam Disruptions

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has expressed strong criticism towards the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during a hearing in Abuja.

The Monday session focused on significant disruptions and irregularities that plagued the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

Lawmakers intensely questioned WAEC's Head in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, regarding systemic failures that have eroded public confidence in the examination process.

The committee, chaired by Representative Oforji Oboku, highlighted concerns about logistical issues, security challenges, and poor management, with reports of students being forced to take exams under extreme conditions, including late-night sessions illuminated by torchlight.

The committee demanded immediate reforms to restore the credibility of the examination process and called for a national education summit to evaluate and improve secondary school infrastructure.

It criticized WAEC's plan to transition to computer-based testing by 2026, citing inadequate infrastructure to support the move.

Dr. Dangut attributed the disruptions to unforeseen logistical challenges and insecurity, but the committee found his explanations insufficient, urging swift action to address the underlying problems.
