Reps Suspend Own State Police Proposal, Consider Presidency's Bill

The House of Representatives has withdrawn its own constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police and opted to consider a similar proposal from President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary session, where lawmakers admitted the Executive-sponsored state police bill for legislative consideration.

The bill passed through first and second readings before being referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further scrutiny.

The development effectively puts the House’s initial proposal on hold as lawmakers begin work on the Executive-backed amendment.

The committee is expected to examine the details of the bill, including its provisions and possible implications for policing and security across the country.

The move comes amid ongoing calls for reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture, with several stakeholders advocating for greater involvement of state governments in addressing local security challenges.

Following the committee’s review, the bill is expected to return to the House floor for further debate and possible amendments before any final legislative action is taken.
