RMAFC: No Final Decision on Disputed Oil Wells Yet

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission has disowned media reports claiming certain disputed crude oil and gas wells have been recommended for ceding to specific oil-producing states, insisting that no such decision has been taken.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Chairman Mohammed Shehu said the commission was aware of a “purported report allegedly issued by the Inter-Agency Committee on the Verification of Coordinates of Disputed Crude Oil and Gas Wells between States,” circulating in parts of the media.

He described the report as “misleading, premature, and not representative of the position or conclusions of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.”

“At this stage, there is no finalised recommendation or decision regarding the ceding or reallocation of any oil wells, as due institutional processes are still ongoing,” Shehu added.

The commission explained that it only received a draft report from the inter-agency committee on Friday, 13 February 2026.

Following established protocol, the draft has been transmitted to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, the National Boundary Commission, and the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation for detailed review and technical input.

After receiving feedback from these agencies, the matter will undergo further scrutiny by RMAFC’s internal committees, including the Committee on Crude Oil, Gas and Investment and the Legal Matters Committee.

Their findings will then be presented to the commission’s Plenary Session for deliberation and final recommendations.

Once the institutional processes are completed, the commission’s final report will be formally transmitted to the President and the Attorney-General of the Federation for further action in line with the law.

The commission urged the public, stakeholders, and media organisations to disregard speculative reports and await official communication.

“RMAFC remains committed to transparency, due process, and the objective discharge of its constitutional mandate in the national interest,” the statement said.

Shehu also reminded affected oil-producing states to actively participate in plotting verified coordinates of disputed and newly drilled wells, assuring that the commission will remain impartial throughout the process.
