
The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Amupitana was confirmed on Thursday afternoon after appearing before the Red Chamber for screening at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The exercise, which began at 12:55pm following the arrival of the Professor of Law, University of Jos, who was in the company of his family members, as well as Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, and other dignitaries, ended with a voice vote by the lawmakers.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to commence the screening exercise, disclosed to his fellow lawmakers that Amupitan had been checked and cleared by the offices of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Service, and the Inspector-General of Police of any criminal records.
Amupitan's visions, plans, and ideas to ensure credible elections, electoral reforms, and the use of technology to enhance the electoral process formed part of the screening exercise by the Red Chamber.
Following his confirmation, he is now expected to focus on preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections, as well as the 2027 general elections.
