Senate Confirms Fasina as Non-Career Ambassador Despite Protests

The Senate has confirmed Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a non-career ambassadorial nominee, despite opposition from some lawmakers and civil society groups.

The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which said allegations against Fasina were investigated by relevant authorities, including the University Governing Council and the Nigeria Police, and were found to be false.

Presenting the committee’s report, Senator Simon Lalong said the committee recommended the confirmation of Fasina’s nomination as a non-career ambassador and high commissioner of Nigeria.

The confirmation sparked debate on the Senate floor, with some lawmakers raising objections while others, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Abdul Ningi, supported his clearance.

Akpabio said the committee relied on reports from the police, the Department of State Services and the university council, urging senators not to base decisions on unverified claims.

The development comes days after civil society groups protested at the National Assembly, asking lawmakers to reject Fasina’s nomination over allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations and victimisation.

The groups argued that ongoing legal cases involving the nominee should be concluded before his confirmation.
