Sokoto Court Sentences Three to Death for Terrorism, Arms Trafficking

A Sokoto State High Court has sentenced three men, including a Nigerien national, to death by hanging after finding them guilty of terrorism and arms trafficking offences.

Justice Muhammad Nuraddeen Bello of High Court No. 23, Sokoto, delivered the judgment in case number SS/45C/2026, convicting Yusuf Muhammad, also known as Sallau, a citizen of Niger Republic, alongside Jabbi Alhaji Yalle and Kabiru Muhammad.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of all money recovered from the convicts to the Federal Government.

The three men were arrested on June 13, 2025, by operatives of the Department of State Services' Counter Terrorism Unit over alleged cross-border activities linked to terrorism and illegal arms trafficking.

Delivering judgment, Justice Bello found the defendants guilty on all counts and imposed the death penalty by hanging.

The court further directed that all monetary exhibits recovered during the investigation be forfeited to the Federal Government as proceeds connected to the criminal activities.

The conviction marks another significant outcome in ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat terrorism, arms proliferation and organized cross-border crime.

According to security sources, the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-led operations targeting networks involved in the movement of weapons and support for terrorist activities across Nigeria's borders.

Reacting to the judgment, officials described the ruling as part of sustained efforts to dismantle terrorist cells and disrupt criminal networks operating within and beyond Nigeria's borders.

"The conviction is the latest in a series of successful prosecutions by the DSS in its sustained operations against terrorism and organised cross-border criminal networks across Nigeria," a security source said.

The judgment underscores the government's continued push to strengthen counterterrorism efforts and prosecute individuals involved in activities that threaten national security.
