Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, says the Federal Government has increased the minimum monthly salary of soldiers from N49,000 to N100,000 as part of efforts to improve military welfare.
Musa disclosed this in an interview with News Central, but said the country's defence budget remains inadequate to meet the military's operational needs.
"It's not enough," the minister said when asked whether current funding was sufficient, despite the recent improvement in personnel welfare.
Musa also renewed his call for the death penalty for kidnappers, arguing that tougher sanctions are needed to deter rising cases of abduction across the country.
He said weak laws had emboldened criminals and stressed that offenders must face severe punishment to curb insecurity.
The minister also dismissed claims of poor feeding in the military, saying a viral video showing inadequate meals was staged after a soldier allegedly removed food items to create a false impression.
