South African authorities have arrested more than 80 suspects in connection with recent Afrophobic attacks against African migrants, the country’s Consul General to Nigeria, Professor Bobby Moroe, has said.
Speaking at a forum organised by the Nigeria South Africa Chamber of Commerce in Lagos, Moroe said investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected.
He said the South African government will not tolerate human rights violations, stressing that the country’s constitution protects both citizens and migrants.
Moroe added that law enforcement agencies are working to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the African Union Executive Council has declined Ghana’s request to place the attacks on the agenda of its October summit.
Instead, the council backed South Africa’s proposal for a dedicated continental conference on migration to address the broader issues surrounding the movement and protection of migrants across Africa.
