Tanzania Lifts Curfew After Deadly Election Protests

Tanzania has lifted the night-time curfew imposed on Dar es Salaam after days of deadly post-election protests that paralyzed much of the country’s commercial capital.

Shops have begun to reopen and traffic is returning, but petrol stations are still crowded and shortages of basic goods continue.

The unrest erupted after opposition supporters rejected last week’s general election results. President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in on Monday after claiming a sweeping 98% victory.

Families are now either searching for missing relatives or burying those killed in clashes between protesters and security forces. Internet service, which was shut down nationwide, is gradually returning, though several social media platforms remain restricted. Police have warned the public against posting protest images online.

Fatality figures remain disputed.

Opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s Chadema party told AFP it had recorded “no less than 800” deaths.

A diplomatic source told the BBC there was credible evidence of at least 500.

The UN Human Rights Office earlier spoke of at least 10 confirmed deaths across three cities.

The Tanzanian government has not released any official casualty count.
