Thai Sailors and Ship Convicted in Nigeria for Cocaine Trafficking

A Nigerian Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted 10 Thai sailors and their vessel, MV Chayanee Naree, for trafficking 32.9 kilograms of cocaine from Brazil to Nigeria.

The case, overseen by Justice Daniel Osiagor, concluded after more than three years of rigorous prosecution by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The sailors, all Thai nationals, were initially arraigned in February 2022 alongside nine Nigerian suspects on charges related to conspiracy and the illegal transportation of cocaine through the Apapa seaport in Lagos. The Thai crew included Krilerk Tanakhan, Boonlert Hansoongnern, Jakkarin Booncharoen, and others. Arrested in October 2021, the group faced accusations under the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act.

Following a failed no-case submission, the sailors entered a plea bargain with the NDLEA, leading to their conviction. Justice Osiagor ordered the vessel to pay a fine of $4 million, while the sailors were fined additional amounts totaling $360,000. The ruling serves as a stern warning to international drug cartels and their collaborators that Nigeria is committed to cracking down on illicit drug trafficking.

Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), NDLEA’s Chairman, emphasized the significance of the court's decision, stating it reinforces Nigeria's zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking. He praised the NDLEA team for their dedication and urged continued vigilance as the case against the Nigerian suspects proceeds.

The trial of the Nigerian defendants, including Samuel Messiah and others, is set to resume on June 25. This case marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria's ongoing battle against drug trafficking, showcasing the country's resolve to maintain stringent enforcement and uphold the rule of law.
