Nearly 4,900 people have been evacuated to shelters in Bangkok after days of heavy rain triggered widespread flooding, inundating homes and roads across Thailand’s capital.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said Sunday that about 52,000 households had been affected, prompting authorities to declare a disaster across the city.
More than 330 millimetres of rain fell in some parts of Bangkok between Thursday and Sunday, according to Thailand’s weather agency.
Thousands of residents spent Saturday night in temporary shelters, while others began cleaning their homes and drying out belongings as floodwaters receded in some neighbourhoods.
September is typically the peak of Thailand’s rainy season, but several Bangkok residents said this year’s flooding appeared more severe than usual.
The latest floods have revived memories of the widespread disaster in 2011, when flooding across Thailand killed more than 500 people and damaged millions of homes.
