Three Die During Mexico's World Cup Victory Celebrations in Mexico City

Three people have died during celebrations in Mexico City following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Authorities said the victims—a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man—died from suffocation after huge crowds gathered across the capital to celebrate the country's first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986.

The city government said more than one million people filled the streets, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument, after the final whistle.

Emergency services responded to reports of three unconscious people at different locations along Paseo de la Reforma. Officials said first aid and CPR were administered before the victims were taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims' families and urged supporters to celebrate responsibly, with care and empathy.

Mexico's victory secured a place in the Round of 16, where the team could face England national football team if England defeats the DR Congo national football team in their knockout fixture.
