President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military Head of State, retired General Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding Nigerian leader whose time in power left lasting marks on the country.
In a statement issued on Monday by Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Babangida’s remarkable military career culminated in his emergence as Nigeria’s leader following the 1985 coup.
The president said Babangida’s eight-year administration significantly influenced Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development.
He credited the former military leader with expanding the economy, establishing infrastructure and creating agencies and institutions that have continued to contribute to national development.
Tinubu also praised Babangida for what he described as his foresight, wisdom and sense of equity and fairness, saying many states in the federation might not have been created without his decisions and contributions.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
The president said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to national development.
Tinubu further acknowledged Babangida’s continued role in national discourse despite his retirement from public life.
He said the former military leader, who lives quietly at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, continues to provide valuable counsel and guidance on national issues.
The president said Babangida’s advice remains an inspiration to younger generations and wished him continued good health, renewed strength and many more years of life and service to the nation.
Tinubu prayed that Almighty Allah would continue to preserve the former military leader and keep him in good health for many more years.
