President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles, in a move to strengthen Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.
The initiative will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), with a broader mandate to coordinate both gas-powered and electric vehicle adoption nationwide.
According to a State House statement, the programme will continue to drive the rollout of CNG infrastructure, including refuelling stations, conversion programmes and related equipment, while also leading the development of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure across the country.
The government said the expansion reflects its commitment to affordable and environmentally responsible transportation, noting that gas remains a strategic fuel for reducing costs and conserving foreign exchange.
President Tinubu also directed the leadership of the initiative to fast-track the nationwide deployment of vehicle conversion kits and ensure affordability for Nigerians through partnerships with financial institutions, including CreditCorp Nigeria.
He further ordered the accelerated rollout of mobile refuelling units to improve access to compressed natural gas as permanent infrastructure continues to expand.
