President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for advancing to the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement issued Sunday on his personal handle on X, the President praised the team’s discipline, unity, and consistent performance, describing them as a “symbol of excellence” representing Nigeria on the global stage.
“Your discipline, teamwork, and resilience have brought pride to our nation,” Tinubu said.
“You have carried our flag with honour and earned the respect of the world.”
The D’Tigress sealed a place in the final after a hard-fought 75–68 victory over Senegal in the semi-final on Saturday. The win also secured them a spot in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
President Tinubu also singled out head coach Rena Wakama for special praise, noting her leadership as Nigeria’s first female coach to lead the team to a continental final.
“Coach Rena Wakama’s dedication and competence have brought this team to the cusp of history,” the President stated.
“The entire nation stands firmly behind you.”
The D’Tigress are aiming for a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title when they face Mali's Women's basketball team in the final later today at 7pm Nigerian time.
