President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Nigerian Navy on its 70th anniversary, describing it as Africa’s most formidable naval force and a key anchor of national stability and economic prosperity.
Tinubu said the Navy’s evolution from a fledgling service to a modern maritime power reflects Nigeria’s sovereignty and its growing leadership role on the continent.
He said the anniversary coinciding with what he called the Navy’s “continental leadership” was symbolic, noting that it marked the service’s maturity and strategic relevance.
The president spoke during an international fleet review, where he witnessed aerial combat displays and a parade of naval assets alongside foreign partners, describing the event as a demonstration of global recognition of the Nigerian Navy’s role in maritime security cooperation.
He charged naval officers and ratings to sustain professionalism and deepen operational capacity in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Tinubu also said the country’s maritime space remains vital to the economy, serving as a major source of foreign exchange and a key route for global trade.
He commended the Navy for strengthening surveillance, rapid response operations and enforcement efforts, saying these measures have helped curb piracy and reduce crude oil theft and other maritime crimes in Nigerian waters.
