The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a fatal road crash on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway.
The accident claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates and left the boxer injured.
In a statement released by the presidency, Tinubu described the incident as a painful tragedy that has cast a deep shadow over the season.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” the president said.
The victims were identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Tinubu said he personally spoke with Anthony Joshua to offer his condolences and prayers.
“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates,” he said, adding that he wished the boxer a full and speedy recovery.
The president also praised Joshua’s achievements, describing him as a symbol of courage, discipline, and national pride.
“As a sportsman, you have always shown unwavering love for our country,” Tinubu said.
According to the president, Joshua confirmed that he is receiving medical care.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital, also assured Tinubu that everything possible would be done to ensure the boxer gets the best treatment.
Tinubu said he also reached out to Joshua’s mother to offer prayers and support.
He prayed for strength for the families of the deceased and asked God to grant eternal rest to the departed.
“May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” the president said.
