President Bola Tinubu has postponed planned trips to the G20 leaders’ summit in South Africa and the AU-EU summit in Angola as he awaits security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and a bloody attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
A statement from the presidency said Tinubu ordered additional security deployments to Eruku and “the entire Ekiti Local Government Area” of Kwara State and directed the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the church attack.
Aso Rock said the president delayed travel to get first-hand updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima and from security agencies.
“He now awaits reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who paid a sympathy visit to Kebbi on his behalf, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the attack in Kwara,” presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said.
The postponement came as Tinubu expressed sorrow over recent security losses.
“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am depressed with the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty," the president said.
"May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes. I am also depressed that heartless terrorists have disrupted the education of innocent schoolgirls.
"I have directed the security agencies to act swiftly and bring the girls back to Kebbi State.”
