Tinubu Says Toughest Phase of Reforms Is Over, Promises Prosperity

President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria has moved beyond the most difficult phase of his economic reforms, declaring that the country is entering an era of prosperity.

In his Independence Day address marking Nigeria’s 66th anniversary, Tinubu said the reforms had corrected major economic weaknesses and laid the foundation for sustainable growth.

He said the economy grew by more than four per cent this year, while inflation had fallen from its peak, foreign reserves had improved and the foreign exchange market had stabilised.

The President also said Nigeria recorded more than six billion dollars in non oil export revenue in 2025, describing it as the highest in the country’s history.

Tinubu warned against calls to return to fuel subsidies, insisting that abandoning the reforms would reverse the progress made so far.

He said the government’s priority would now shift to reducing the cost of living by lowering the cost of food production, transportation and manufacturing.

According to him, the government will expand irrigation and mechanised farming, improve access to seeds and fertiliser, and invest in roads, railways, ports and food storage.

Tinubu also promised more support for businesses, industrial growth and job creation, particularly for young Nigerians.

On social welfare, he said the government would strengthen direct support for vulnerable households, improve access to student loans and expand consumer credit through CREDICORP.

He acknowledged that millions of Nigerians were still struggling with food, school fees, healthcare and transportation costs, but insisted that the government was determined to reduce poverty.

“The age of reform has done its work. Now begins the age of prosperity,” Tinubu declared.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to building a country where economic growth translates into better living conditions for ordinary citizens.
