Tinubu Swears In Amupitan As INEC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Amupitan arrived the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for his formal swearing-in on Thursday morning
after being confirmed as chairman of the electoral body following his appearance before the Senate for screening at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on October 16.

Upon his arrival for the ceremony, the 58-year-old Professor of Law, University of Jos, exchanged pleasantries with dignitaries gathered which was scheduled to begin at 1pm.

During his screening exercise before the Red Chamber, Amupitan outlined his visions, plans, and ideas to ensure credible elections, electoral reforms, and the use of technology to enhance the electoral process.

“We must conduct elections where even the loser will congratulate the winner and say, ‘You won fairly and well.’ When that happens, voters’ confidence will naturally be restored,” he had said.

Following today's ceremony, he is now expected to focus on preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections, as well as the 2027 general elections.

President Bola Tinubu had on October 14 formally requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of INEC, replacing Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure came to an end recently.

He, Amupitan now becomes the sixth significant head of the electoral body since its establishment.
