Tinubu to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu will deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during the inauguration of the Inter Ministerial Committee responsible for organising the national celebrations.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the presidential address will be one of the major highlights of the commemoration.

Akume described Democracy Day as an opportunity to honour Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic rule, including those associated with the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late MKO Abiola.

He said the occasion will also provide an opportunity for the government to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.

Other activities lined up for the celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an interdenominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9, and youth and women focused programmes on June 10.

The programme will conclude on June 12 with the presidential broadcast and a gala night.

Akume urged members of the organising committee to ensure effective planning and prudent use of resources as preparations continue for the anniversary.
