Trump Renews Threat That Canada Could Become 51st US State

United States President Donald Trump has renewed his controversial suggestion that Canada could become the country’s 51st state, citing trade disputes and what he described as unfair treatment of the United States.

Trump made the remarks on Wednesday during a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, where he criticised Canada’s tariffs on American goods and restrictions on US dairy products.

He accused Canada of taking advantage of the American economy, insisting that the country depended more on the United States than Washington depended on Ottawa.

Trump said Canada would eventually become the 51st state, adding that the arrangement was the only way he believed relations between both countries could work.

The US president also compared his comments about Canada to his interest in Greenland and floated the idea of renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

His remarks come amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with Canadian officials repeatedly rejecting any suggestion that the country could become part of the United States.

In September, British Columbia Premier David Eby said the province would install signs at US border crossings declaring that it would never become the 51st state.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford had also rejected Trump’s proposal, insisting that Canadian sovereignty was not for sale.
