U.S. President Donald Trump has said the suspect in the shooting incident near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington was “taken down” by Secret Service agents after attempting to breach security.
Speaking at a press conference shortly after the incident, Trump said the attacker charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons before being subdued by officers.
He praised what he described as the “very brave” response of the Secret Service, noting that one officer was shot at close range but survived due to a bulletproof vest.
“He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Trump also said he had shared video footage of the suspect on social media as officials work to piece together details of the incident.
