Gunmen have killed two police officers during an attack on a checkpoint along Agbani Road in Enugu.
The Enugu State Police Command said the attack happened on Thursday night when suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, opened fire on operatives of the Police Distress Response Squad.
Police spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe said the officers came under sudden attack and returned fire, forcing the assailants to flee with gunshot injuries.
A police patrol vehicle was set ablaze during the exchange. The two officers who were critically wounded were rushed to hospital but later died.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered an intensified manhunt for the attackers, directing tactical and intelligence units to track them down.
Police also said a Lexus 330 SUV allegedly used by the gunmen was recovered after the attack. The vehicle was riddled with bullet holes from the gunfight.
