US House Backs Resolution to Halt Military Action in Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The US House of Representatives has backed a resolution seeking to halt American military action in Iran, in a largely symbolic move that signals political pushback against President Donald Trump as diplomatic efforts with Tehran stall.

Lawmakers voted 215–208 in favour of the measure, with four Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the resolution. While non-binding, the vote represents a public rebuke of the administration’s handling of the escalating crisis, as the measure would still require Senate approval and could be vetoed by the president.

In a statement on social media, Democrats described the vote as “a loud and unambiguous message” to President Trump to end what they called an “unpopular and illegal war of choice in Iran.”

Tensions have risen in recent weeks amid stalled negotiations aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route for oil and gas. Washington and Tehran have issued conflicting signals, with Iranian officials saying no meaningful progress has been made, while Trump has expressed cautious optimism about a potential deal.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles remain a central issue in negotiations, insisting Tehran must scale back nuclear activity and hand over near-weapons-grade material for any agreement to hold.

Meanwhile, violence has continued to flare. Kuwaiti officials reported an Iranian drone strike on a passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport that killed one person and injured 63 others.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attack on Beirut linked to the conflict would trigger a “full-scale resumption” of hostilities, while confirming that indirect communication with Washington is still ongoing despite a lack of progress in talks.
