
Top seeds continued their dominance on Day 5 of the US Open, with Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and Alexander Zverev booking their places in the third round.
World No. 1 Sinner powered past Alexei Popyrin 6–3, 6–2, 6–2, extending his unbeaten run at hardcourt Grand Slams to 23 matches. Swiatek survived a second-set slip to edge past Suzan Lamens 6–1, 4–6, 6–4, while Osaka cruised through Hailey Baptiste 6–3, 6–1.
Zverev also progressed with a straight-sets victory over Jacob Fearnley, while Lorenzo Musetti outclassed David Goffin 6–4, 6–0, 6–2.
However, it was a day of exits for several big names. Stefanos Tsitsipas was stunned in five sets by Daniel Altmaier, and ninth seed Karen Khachanov also crashed out in a surprise result.
In the women’s draw, Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to set up a third-round clash with Maria Sakkari. Meanwhile, doubles action saw Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez pull off an upset against the sixth seeds.
Round 3 continues on Friday with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Aryna Sabalenka among the top names set to feature.
