US Supreme Court Rejects Trump Bid to End Birthright Citizenship

The US Supreme Court has ruled against President Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, upholding that nearly all children born on American soil are citizens by right.

In a 6–3 decision delivered on the final day of its term, the court maintained the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment, confirming that birthright citizenship applies to children born in the US, including those of undocumented migrants or temporary visa holders.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, stated that such children are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and therefore qualify for citizenship at birth.

Trump had sought to redefine the constitutional provision, arguing it should not apply to children of undocumented immigrants or visitors, but lower courts and now the Supreme Court rejected the move.

The ruling marks another major setback for Trump’s policy agenda, following previous decisions blocking parts of his tariffs and attempts to remove a Federal Reserve governor.
