The United States has warned its citizens in Nigeria of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in the country.
In a security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the American government advised its citizens to exercise caution and take additional safety measures.
The embassy said it had received information indicating a potential threat against U.S. facilities and institutions linked to the United States.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice stated.
As part of precautionary measures, the embassy urged Americans to remain vigilant when visiting the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.
It also advised them to vary their travel routes and times to reduce risks.
The advisory forms part of broader security guidance issued by the U.S. government for its citizens living in or travelling to Nigeria, where concerns about terrorism, kidnapping and violent crime persist in some areas.
The embassy did not provide details about the nature of the threat or possible attackers but stressed the need for increased vigilance among American citizens and institutions connected to the United States.
Security alerts of this nature are periodically issued by foreign missions to keep their nationals informed about potential risks and encourage precautionary measures.
