The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the delay in the conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), attributing the disruption to logistical, operational and security challenges.
In a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC said preliminary findings showed that a fatal road accident on June 3 claimed the lives of three officials transporting sensitive examination materials, significantly affecting distribution schedules.
The council described the incident as a major setback, noting that the loss of personnel, combined with security concerns in some parts of the country, disrupted the timely movement of examination materials despite emergency measures put in place to manage the situation.
WAEC also cited delays linked to the finalisation of examination arrangements and late candidate registrations, which it said affected the preparation and deployment of materials to some centres.
According to the council, security related disruptions, including protests connected to the abduction of schoolchildren in certain areas, further complicated distribution efforts.
WAEC, however, said examinations conducted on Friday, June 5, were successfully completed in the affected locations and assured candidates and stakeholders that steps have been taken to prevent further disruptions.
The examination body thanked the Federal and State Ministries of Education, the Nigeria Police and other security agencies for their support, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the credibility and integrity of the WASSCE across West Africa.
