The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, with 61.54 per cent of candidates obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Speaking while announcing the results in Lagos on Wednesday, the Head of the WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said 1,950,726 candidates sat for the examination conducted between April 24 and June 19 across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.
According to him, 1,200,514 candidates earned five credits, including English and Mathematics, while 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent, obtained at least five credits with or without the two compulsory subjects. Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in the key performance category, although the overall pass rate declined by 1.42 percentage points compared with 2025.
Dangut also disclosed that WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of those who sat the examination, over alleged examination malpractice.
He noted that the figure was lower than the 9.7 per cent recorded in the previous year.
"The council is investigating the allegations. Those exonerated will have their results released, while those found culpable will face the consequences," Dangut said.
He attributed the successful conduct of the examination to collaboration with security agencies despite logistical challenges, inflation and the activities of rogue website operators.
He added that several supervisors and other suspects involved in examination malpractice were apprehended during the exercise.
Dangut urged schools and other stakeholders to comply with WAEC's registration deadlines, warning that late registration disrupts examination planning and logistics.
"We plead and solicit strict adherence and compliance with our registration timelines to ensure successful conduct of future examinations," he said.
The WAEC boss said the council introduced several measures to strengthen the integrity of the examination, including wider deployment of computer-based testing, the Digital Examiner Marking System, serialisation and randomisation of question papers, digital study resources and electronic certificates.
He also announced that candidates can now generate their result-checker PINs directly through WAEC's online portal, while digital certificates will be available within 48 hours of the release of results. Hard-copy certificates, he said, will be ready within 90 days.
Dangut further disclosed that candidates sponsored by states or schools owing WAEC would not have their results released until outstanding payments are settled.
He announced that the 2026 Second Series of the private candidates' examination is currently ongoing and revealed that the traditional November/December General Certificate Examination will now be held in September and October to allow successful candidates to secure admission earlier.
Describing the briefing as his final results announcement as Head of the WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dangut thanked the Federal Government, state ministries of education, supervisors, invigilators, examiners and other stakeholders for their support.
"I reaffirm WAEC's commitment to integrity, innovation and service to the Nigerian child," he said.
