Former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka will feature at the 2026 US Open after being handed a late wildcard entry, following an initial omission that sparked widespread reaction from fans and the tennis community.
The 41-year-old Swiss star, who is in his farewell season, was not included in the original wildcard list and also did not enter the qualifying rounds, effectively ruling him out of the tournament.
Wawrinka had even posted an emotional message on social media, appearing to say goodbye to the tournament where he won the title in 2016, raising concerns that his final appearance at Flushing Meadows would not happen.
His exclusion quickly drew criticism, with many questioning how a former champion and three-time Grand Slam winner could be overlooked in what is expected to be his final season on tour.

The development means Wawrinka will now complete a full set of Grand Slam appearances in 2026, having featured at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon earlier in the year, all through wildcard entries.
The US Open is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 31, 2026, in New York, giving fans another opportunity to witness one of the sport’s most celebrated competitors on the big stage.
