The Federal Ministry of Works has begun a technical assessment of flood-affected sections of the Benin-Sagamu Expressway following heavy rainfall that disrupted movement along parts of the highway.
Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the assessment on Monday during an inspection of affected areas along the Ore corridor in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Umahi identified three major flood-prone locations along the Ondo section of the expressway: Agofure at kilometre 100, Adolak Junction near the Ore Flyover Bridge at kilometre 107, and the Agric Section at kilometre 117.
He said the ministry was considering targeted engineering interventions at the locations to address recurring flooding, improve drainage capacity and enhance safety for road users.
Represented by the Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State, Engr. Olajide Hussein, the minister said the inspection was part of efforts to identify vulnerable points along major road corridors and develop lasting solutions.
Umahi said recent intense rainfall had caused flooding across several communities and highways in the country, prompting the ministry to begin technical evaluations of affected areas.
He said engineers were examining the causes of the flooding through hydraulic assessments of existing culverts and drainage channels.
“The recent intense precipitation across the country has caused widespread flooding in various communities and along major road corridors, a phenomenon widely attributed to ongoing climate change impacts,” Umahi said.
He added that the ministry was tracing the sources of water overflow and considering measures such as resizing cross-culverts and clearing blocked drainage channels.
The minister assured motorists that the government was taking steps to improve the stability of the expressway and reduce the impact of future flooding.
He also expressed sympathy to commuters and residents affected by the disruption caused by the floods.
