Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Defects from PDP to APC

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), his office confirmed Monday.

The announcement came through his media aide, Nuhu Anka, who said the decision followed consultations with party leaders, elders, and supporters across the state. “After careful consideration, and in the interest of stability, progress, and sustainable development, Governor Lawal has decided to formally join the APC,” the statement read.

Anka cited internal crises within the PDP, including leadership disagreements and structural challenges, as factors influencing the move.
The defection is also intended to align the governor with a platform that ensures greater unity and stronger cooperation with the federal government.

Lawal, 60, thanked PDP members for their support over the years and pledged to continue improving unity, security, and development under the APC.
He is among governors expected to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections.

With his defection, the number of APC governors in Nigeria rises to 31.
The move follows a Court of Appeal ruling that restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan.
